In this article, we focus on trends in patent filings and the investment in patent protection. While overall patent filing volumes have stabilised, the standout story is the continuing strength of Australia's life sciences and health technology sector. Pharmaceuticals, medical technology, and biotechnology together account for one-third of all patent filings, and the sector's global significance continues to grow, accompanied by record biotech M&A activity as major pharma companies race to head off looming patent cliffs. We take a look at who is filing, how they are filing, which technology fields are shifting, and recent patent litigation. We set out the key trends and what they mean for patent owners, advisers, innovators, and investors.Source: https://www.mallesons.com/au/en/insights/latest-thinking/patent-trends-and-the-continuing-strength-of-the-australian-health-tech-sector.htmlA notable procedural trend has emerged in Australian patent opposition proceedings. Research published by IPKat indicates that Delegates are increasingly invoking their discretion under section 60 (3) of the Patents Act to raise grounds of opposition not raised by the parties.[15]Since January 2024, this discretion has been exercised in approximately 14% of opposition proceedings — a seven-fold increase from the roughly 2% between 2016 and 2023. Delegate-raised grounds were made out in around 73% of cases in which they were raised and were determinative of the outcome in around 44%.References[1]IP Australia, Australian IP Report 2026, pp 27-28. Nelson Advisors to publish European HealthTech 2026 Annual Report on the 10th December 2026, further details will be announced in the coming weeks.European HealthTech enters the final quarter of 2026 in a position that would have seemed implausible three years ago. Capital is flowing at record levels, the continent has produced the largest AI for biology financing in history and the world’s best-performing digital health public listings of 2025 have reset expectations for what a healthtech company can be worth. And yet, beneath those headlines, the market is narrower, harder and more selective than at any point since 2019. Our report sets out to explain that paradox and to help founders, investors and operators navigate it. The core finding is concentration. Galen Growth’s data show European digital health venture funding reaching $6.2 billion in 2025, up 15 per cent year-on-year and the fastest growth of any region globally. The first half of 2026 added a further $5.9 billion, up 60 per cent on the same period of 2025. Yet that first-half figure was achieved across only 190 deals, down from 283 a year earlier, and more than a third of it came from a single transaction: Isomorphic Labs’ $2.1 billion Series B in May. Strip out Isomorphic and the half was essentially flat. Deal counts across Europe are at their lowest levels since 2020, seed and angel activity has contracted sharply, and the median time from first funding to exit has lengthened from roughly eight years to almost eleven. Capital has not left European healthtech; it has simply become far more discriminating about where it goes. Four themes define 2026. First, health AI is no longer a category; it is the operating assumption of the entire sector. Every top ten European healthtech round of 2026 was AI framed, from Isomorphic’s drug design models to Neko Health’s preventive scanning, Oviva’s AI enabled chronic care and Alan’s insurance platform. In the UK, health AI attracted $2.6 billion in the first half alone, making it the second-largest AI vertical after enterprise software. Ambient clinical documentation has moved from pilot to procurement, with NHS England setting an April 2026 adoption expectation and publishing national guidance; Germany and France are a year or so behind. Radiology AI now has randomised-controlled-trial evidence of the highest standard following the final MASAI results published in The Lancet in January 2026. The frontier has moved to agentic systems that act rather than merely summarise, and this is where the regulatory and clinical-safety debates of 2027 will be fought. Second, the regulatory environment is being rebuilt in real time. The European Commission’s December 2025 proposal to simplify MDR and IVDR is working through the Council and Parliament, with adoption targeted for the second quarter of 2027. The AI Act’s Digital Omnibus, in force since July 2026, pushed high-risk obligations for AI-enabled medical devices to August 2028. The European Health Data Space begins to apply in March 2027. In the UK, NHS England is being abolished, the Health Bill establishes a Single Patient Record, and the MHRA has published draft device regulations with an international reliance route. Germany’s DiGA framework has moved to performance-based pricing. None of these reforms is complete, and the transition itself is the single largest source of both risk and opportunity for companies selling into European health systems. Third, the exit market has bifurcated. There has been no European digital health or health AI IPO on any exchange in 2025 or 2026 to date. Ottobock’s €808 million Frankfurt listing in October 2025 was the only meaningful European medtech IPO and trades roughly 15 per cent below its issue price. By contrast, the US window reopened decisively: Hinge Health and Heartflow have more than doubled since listing. Oura, Finnishfounded but US-domiciled, filed publicly for a Nasdaq IPO in early September 2026 that could value it above $16 billion. The lesson European boards are drawing is uncomfortable but clear: scale exits currently price in Meanwhile, M&A has become the default liquidity route, with Sword Health’s $285 million purchase of Kaia Health, RadNet’s $269 million acquisition of Gleamer and Doctolib’s purchase of Medicus Health illustrating a market of sensible, mid-sized outcomes rather than venture-scale home runs. Fourth, the investor base has shifted. US investors participated in 62 per cent of European late-stage digital health deals in 2025, three times the 2023 share, and every 2026 mega-round was led or co-led by a US or sovereign investor. At the same time, public capital has become the anchor of the European fund ecosystem: the British Business Bank, Bpifrance, the European Investment Fund and the European Innovation Council are now cornerstone investors in most new European health funds, and the EQT-managed Scaleup Europe Fund is preparing its first €100 million-plus cheques for the autumn of 2026. In between, a small group of highconviction growth investors, notably Kinnevik, Index Ventures, Lightspeed, Thrive Capital and General Catalyst, have written the cheques that defined the year. Our outlook for 2027 is constructive but conditional. We expect European healthtech funding to end 2026 at between $9 billion and $10.5 billion on Galen Growth’s definition, comfortably a record, and to hold in a similar range in 2027 with fewer, larger rounds. We expect between one and three European-origin healthtech IPOs in the twelve months to September 2027, with Oura the near-certainty and Doctolib the most plausible Europeanexchange candidate for late 2027. We expect the MDR/IVDR revision to pass, the first NHS ambient scribing framework awards to be made, and the first meaningful consolidation among ambient AI vendors as the category commoditises. And we expect the gap between AI-validated, proof-rich companies trading at six to eight times revenue and everyone else at three to five times to widen further before it narrows. The rest of this report provides the evidence behind those conclusions. Section 1 sets out the funding data in detail. Section 2 describes the macro and capital-market backdrop. Sections 3 to 6 examine the four sub-sectors in turn: health AI, medtech, health IT and digital health business models. Section 7 covers regulation and policy across the EU and the UK. Sections 8 to 10 present examples of innovation and case studies of funding rounds and exits. Section 11 gives our IPO predictions for the next twelve months. Section 12 profiles the most active investors by stage. Sections 13 and 14 draw out insights for founders and for venture, private equity and family office investors. Section 15 sets out our predictions for 2027, and Section 16 describes our methodology and sources. A note on data. Definitions of “healthtech”, “digital health” and “medtech” vary materially between data providers. Galen Growth’s digital health series, which we use as the primary reference for venture funding, excludes most biotech and classic device companies; Dealroom’s healthtech series is broader and includes both; CB Insights’ European figures are narrower again. Where we quote a number, we name the source and, where the difference matters, show the alternatives. Where we could not verify a figure from a primary or reputable secondary source, we say so rather than estimate. All figures are as at 13 September 2026 unless otherwise stated.Source: https://nelsonadvisors.co.uk/Nelson Advisors > European Healthcare Technology Investment Banking Nelson Advisors specialise in Mergers and Acquisitions for European HealthTech, MedTech, Digital Health, Healthcare IT, Healthcare AI companies in the Lower to Mid Market ranging from $25M to $250M EV. www.nelsonadvisors.co.ukHealthcare.Digital is the Google News approved HealthTech and MedTech Thought Leadership platform for Nelson Advisors, positioning them as a specialised authority on European Healthcare Technology M&A and strategic corporate development. https://www.healthcare.digital Nelson Advisors publish Europe's Leading Healthcare Technology Investment Banking Newsletter every week, join 5000+ HealthTech and MedTech subscribers today! https://lnkd.in/e5hTp_xb #NelsonAdvisors #HealthTech #MedTech #DigitalHealth #HealthIT #HealthcareAI Nelson Advisors LLP Hale House, 76-78 Portland Place, Marylebone, London, W1B 1NT lloyd@nelsonadvisors.co.uk paul@nelsonadvisors.co.uk Meet Nelson Advisors @ Events in 2026 Digital Health Rewired > March 2026 > Birmingham, UK NHS ConfedExpo > June 2026 > Manchester, UK HLTH Europe > June 2026, Amsterdam, Netherlands HIMSS AI in Healthcare > July 2026, New York, USA Bits & Pretzels > September 2026, Munich, Germany HealthInvestor Healthcare Summit > September 2026, London, UK World Health Summit 2026 > October 2026, Berlin, Germany HLTH USA 2026 > October 2026, USA Global Health Exhibition 2026 > October 2026, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia Web Summit 2026 > November 2026, Lisbon, Portugal MEDICA 2026 > November 2026, Düsseldorf, Germany Leaders in Health Summit 2026 > November 2026, London, UK Venture Capital World Summit > December 2026, Toronto, Canada Meet Nelson Advisors @ Events in 2027 Digital Health Rewired > March 2027 > Birmingham, UK Barclays Health Elevate > March 2027, London, UK NHS ConfedExpo > June 2027 > Manchester, UK HLTH Europe > June 2027, Amsterdam, Netherlands

Nelson Advisors featured in The Daily Brief's 'Sopris Buys Blackford From Bayer, Silent on Its 45 AI Vendors' article.Sopris Capital has closed its purchase of Blackford Analysis from Bayer, reported October 9th, and is merging it into Azra AI. The only public commitment covers existing customers, with nothing on pricing, BAAs or the 45 plus AI vendors on the platform.Source: https://www.beri.net/article/sopris-blackford-analysis-acquisition-bayer-azra-ai-radiology-ai-orchestration-customer-continuityWhy Azra AI Wants an Imaging Platform Azra wants Blackford's detections feeding its follow-up queues. Azra, based in Nashville, describes itself as an overlay on the EHR with bidirectional integration, where the EHR stays the system of record and Azra acts as the patient management layer. It sells incidental findings management, oncology navigation, clinical trial matching and cancer registry automation, and claims deployment at more than 1,500 sites. It names no customers. The two companies were already partners. Their August 5, 2026 announcement paired Blackford's 130-plus imaging apps with Azra's navigation tools. Azra CEO John Marshall said, "A finding that is detected but not followed up on is not a win for the patient." A Nelson Advisors write-up of the deal describes the acquisition as formalising that commercial relationship, says Blackford managing director James Holroyd will continue to lead imaging operations, and says existing commercial distribution agreements "remain fully operational." That piece is an adviser's commentary, not a Sopris filing.https://www.healthcare.digital/single-post/nelson-advisors-capitalising-on-healthcare-ai-infrastructure-sopris-capital-s-acquisition-of-blac
