If AI successfully reduces administrative burdens, this may make in-person appointments more effective, with clinicians focussed on the patient rather than administration. This was found in interim data from pilots, including from NHS England-funded studies in London (led by Great Ormond Street Hospital) have shown that ambient AI tools can drive efficiencies in the NHS, including reduced administrative burden and reduction in appointment times. There will also be benefits to overall population health if new technologies support earlier diagnosis or more efficient care. For example, integrated data from wearables could benefit patients through improved health outcomes. Data, if available for a representative group of the population, could be used to identify disparities in health outcomes across diverse groups and target interventions to relevant group(s).Evidence suggests the public has an increasing appetite for using technology to self-manage their care:4 in 5 people said they would be happy to use technology to manage their health if recommended by the NHS, and more than 7 in 10 say they would use technology to avoid a hospital admission.45) Marino F and others. European HealthTech this week is being shaped by early implementation steps around the EU AI Act / MDR–IVDR stack, fresh EU‑level funding windows, and several notable AI‑driven digital health rounds in Switzerland and Spain. Deal flow is clustering around preventive AI, automation of clinical workflows and AMR diagnostics, with MedTech regulatory tightening continuing to drive portfolio and due‑diligence behaviour into 2026.Policy and regulationThe EU’s “Digital Omnibus” proposal is moving through Parliament and Council, aiming to push back and smooth some high‑risk AI timelines under the AI Act and to ease reporting for smaller AI developers, directly impacting AI SaMD roadmaps beyond 2026.Regulators and commentators are now treating the AI Act, MDR/IVDR and the Digital Omnibus as a core stack for health AI, intended to harmonise rules, reduce compliance friction, and clarify expectations for software and AI‑enabled devices from 2026 onward.EU‑level programmes and HTAHorizon Europe’s 2026–2027 work programme channels part of a €14bn R&I envelope into health and digital technologies, with Global Health EDCTP3 allocating up to €147m to infectious‑disease‑linked digital and clinical innovation, which is supportive for data‑rich platforms and diagnostics. The Commission has opened the first submission window for Joint Scientific Consultations under the new EU Health Technology Assessment framework, providing an earlier, centralised read‑across on clinical evidence and cost‑effectiveness for upcoming therapies and possibly complex devices.MDR/IVDR, MedTech and EUDAMEDNew MDR/IVDR guidance and implementing measures, including MDCG‑endorsed documents on software and AI, are feeding into 2026 planning, with a narrative of tighter but more predictable oversight as Notified Body capacity and expectations become clearer.EUDAMED’s staged roll‑out now has four functional modules, with a six‑month transition into a fully mandatory state by 28 May 2026, increasing transparency on actors, certificates and vigilance and raising the data available for payer scrutiny and M&A due diligence.Funding rounds and startup movesZurich‑based Ahead Health has raised about $6m led by RTP Global to build an AI‑powered “health OS” focused on preventive care, positioning itself as a pan‑European infrastructure layer for risk prediction and engagement.Spain’s Tucuvi has secured roughly €17m to scale its LOLA voice‑AI platform, which reports up to 80% automation of nursing follow‑up, reinforcing the thesis around telephonic/voice automation for chronic‑care operations in European providers.MedTech and diagnostics themesFrench MedTech FineHeart has raised around €83m (mix of private and European public capital) to progress its implantable device for advanced heart failure, signalling continued investor appetite for complex cardiovascular hardware plus data plays. Dutch, female‑led ShanX Medtech has closed a ~€24m round to accelerate ultra‑rapid AMR diagnostics from Eindhoven, underlining antimicrobial resistance as a strategically backed European theme and reinforcing the region as an innovation hub for high‑throughput diagnostics. To discuss how Nelson Advisors can help your HealthTech, MedTech, Health AI or Digital Health company, please email lloyd@nelsonadvisors.co.uk>>>European MedTech this week is defined by tightening but clearer MDR/IVDR and EUDAMED timelines, strong early‑year funding for cardiology and AMR diagnostics, and growing focus on robotics, neuro and data‑rich devices. Portfolio rationalisation under MDR pressure and a shift toward platforms that pair hardware with defensible data and AI‑enhanced workflows are central dealmaking themes.Regulation and guidance The Commission’s late‑2025 MDR/IVDR simplification proposal is now shaping 2026 workplans, with emphasis on digitalised procedures, harmonised Notified Body practice and crisper rules for software, AI and cybersecurity in MedTech. EUDAMED has been confirmed as fully mandatory from 28 May 2026, with four live modules (actors, UDI/devices, notified bodies & certificates, market surveillance) making transparency and post‑market surveillance central to EU MedTech strategy. Market structure and MDR pressure 2026 is framed as a defining MDR year, with looming 2027–2028 transition deadlines and Notified Body bottlenecks accelerating portfolio pruning, launch cancellations and selective product withdrawals across European MedTech. Analysts describe a “Great Rationalisation” in which capital concentrates on fewer assets with clear regulatory narratives, strong evidence packages and integration into EHDS‑style data flows rather than stand‑alone devices. Funding rounds and capital flows FineHeart in France has raised about €83m (private plus European public funds) to advance its implantable heart‑failure device, signalling continued appetite for high‑acuity cardiovascular hardware with rich data exhaust. ShanX Medtech in Eindhoven has secured €24m to scale ultra‑rapid AMR diagnostics, reinforcing antimicrobial resistance as a strategic EU priority and positioning the Netherlands as a key diagnostics hub. Innovation themes: robotics, neuro, data Coverage of Paris‑based Robeauté’s microrobotics platform for diagnosis and treatment in neuro underscores growing interest in micro‑robotic and neuro‑interventional devices as 2026 MedTech frontiers. Investors are prioritising devices that combine novel hardware with longitudinal data capture and AI‑supported workflows in cardiovascular, neurovascular, advanced diagnostics and surgical robotics, often designed to plug into emerging EHDS infrastructures. Strategic and cross‑border moves Weekly deal wraps put FineHeart and ShanX among the top European startup transactions for 5–9 January, setting a strong tone for MedTech fundraising into Q1 2026. Strategic commentary highlights ongoing buy‑and‑build strategies in fragmented device niches and MedTech‑adjacent software, with platforms that can scale across borders and align with EU data infrastructure seen as prime consolidation candidates. To discuss how Nelson Advisors can help your HealthTech, MedTech, Health AI or Digital Health company, please email lloyd@nelsonadvisors.co.uk

This Week in European HealthTech and MedTech: 16th January 2026

Report: Generative AI in Healthcare as a Driver of Economic Growth in the UKThis report was commissioned by Healthcare UK. The research, analysis, and proposals contained within this report were developed independently by the authors and do not necessarily represent the views of the UK Government.Presented to the Department for Business and Trade.Report: Generative AI in Healthcare as a Driver of Economic Growth in the UKGenerative AI in UK healthcare is framed as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to drive NHS transformation and broader economic growth, with the UK well placed to become a global leader if it moves quickly and acts in a coordinated way.Strategic opportunity and UK advantage Generative AI is positioned as a strategic catalyst for both NHS reform (access, productivity, prevention) and national economic renewal, not just a tech upgrade. The UK’s combination of longitudinal NHS data, single‑payer structure, world‑class research, and strong AI startup base gives it a distinctive competitive edge versus more fragmented systems like the US or EU peers. Five overarching strategic imperatives The report organises its recommendations into five imperatives: (1) establish the UK as the global leader in healthcare AI, (2) turn UK health data into a strategic growth engine, (3) secure public trust through transparency and co‑production, (4) unlock capital and new commercial models, and (5) develop a world‑class healthcare AI workforce and leadership. These imperatives are explicitly about both health outcomes and exportable economic value (jobs, inward investment, IP, regulatory expertise). Health data as sovereign economic infrastructure Longitudinal NHS data is treated as “critical national infrastructure” and a sovereign asset that should underpin AI innovation, with a call to create a unified national healthcare data resource and minimum viable digital infrastructure across NHS organisations. The report argues for better governance, standardisation, and access (via TREs/SDEs, the Health Data Research Service, and an API‑first architecture) to convert data from an underused asset into a growth engine. Public trust, transparency and benefit‑sharing The authors stress that economic value from AI is only realisable if public trust is actively earned, given legacies like care.data and sensitivities around data usage. A “Public Benefit Transparency Charter” is proposed, including standardised data‑sharing agreements, a real‑time public dashboard of AI uses, clear anonymisation standards, and visible benefit‑sharing so patients see tangible returns from use of their data. Regulatory leadership and evidence generation The UK is encouraged to become the premier global hub for validation and certification of healthcare Gen‑AI, leveraging MHRA, NICE and an evidence‑assurance hub linked to the MHRA “AI Airlock”. Proposals include specialised evaluation frameworks for Gen‑AI, multi‑regulator sandboxes, clearer risk‑based classifications, expanded Approved Bodies, and a public AI approvals registry to provide regulatory clarity and attract international developers. Unlocking capital and new commercial models The report sees a gap between proof‑of‑concept and scaled deployment, driven by fragmented procurement, long sales cycles, and weak economic incentives. It proposes a Health‑Data Sovereign Wealth Fund backed by licensing receipts and public capital, outcome‑based payment models, revenue‑retention for NHS organisations, and national frameworks to shorten cycles and prevent vendor lock‑in (“fixing pilot purgatory”). Workforce, education and implementation capacity Low frontline AI literacy and limited specialist data capacity are seen as major barriers; AI success is framed as a workforce and leadership challenge as much as a tech one. Recommendations include a mandated digital/AI core curriculum for all health professionals by 2026, expansion and formalisation of clinical‑AI fellowships, clear data‑career pathways, and targeted leadership training plus implementation “playbooks” to standardise change management. Eight near‑term priority actions From a longer proposal list, eight actions are elevated as near‑term levers: API gateway for a UK‑wide health data resource, a UK evidence assurance hub, a multi‑regulator sandbox, seeding the Health‑Data Sovereign Wealth Fund, high‑volume “quick‑win” deployments (e.g. ambient voice), mandated AI skills curriculum, the Public Benefit Transparency Charter, and a national framework to fix pilot‑purgatory. These are chosen for high value relative to effort and/or as key enablers for the rest of the strategy. International positioning and partnerships The report benchmarks the UK against the US, EU (e.g. France, Denmark), China and Gulf states, highlighting complementary roles: UK as validation/regulatory‑science hub versus US as model‑development powerhouse, etc. It calls for “regulatory diplomacy” via OECD, WHO, IMDRF and bilateral collaborations, exporting UK regulatory, validation and implementation expertise as a service and soft‑power asset. Risks, constraints and the narrowing window The authors flag major risks: regulatory resource constraints (e.g. very small MHRA AI team), implementation complexity, liability uncertainty, sustainability and energy demands of Gen‑AI, and fierce international competition. The window for UK leadership is described as narrowing; without coordinated action, the country risks losing its data and research advantages to better‑resourced ecosystems despite strong rhetoric and initial public investments.

Key points from HealthcareUK’s Generative AI in Healthcare as a Driver of Economic Growth 2025 report

Bubble risk for AI start-ups in the healthcare sector A regulatory leap imposing high costs, the accrual of obligations and the difficulties of moving from pilot projects to commercialisation are the determining factors by Monica D'AscenzoThe healthcare technology sector is at a turning point, which could mark the bursting of a financial bubble. After a two-year period between 2024 and 2025 characterised by unprecedented capital inflows and booming valuations, the market would be heading for a structural correction in 2026.The fear of a 'bursting' of the artificial intelligence bubble applied to healthcare is not attributable to a simple negative venture capital cycle, but appears to be the mathematical outcome of three converging forces, according to analysts at Nelson Advisors: 'an abrupt regulatory jump imposing typical hardware compliance costs on software start-ups, the maturation of financial obligations taken on at the height of the euphoria phase, and an operational 'reality bath' in healthcare systems, which is rapidly closing the window on the pilot project-based business model'.Source: https://en.ilsole24ore.com/art/bubble-risk-l-e-start-ups-in-the-healthcare-sector-AIuzMid?refresh_ce=1

Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and J.P. Morgan are broadly aligned on 2026 as an AI driven but more selective year for healthcare and technology, with higher capital deployment, more focused M&A and a premium on profitable, workflow‑integrated healthtech.Shared big picture for 2026 All three see AI as a core productivity and earnings driver across sectors, with healthcare one of the main beneficiaries of full‑scale adoption and associated capex. The macro backdrop is framed as slower but positive growth with lower rates and more dispersion, favouring quality growth and cash‑generative platforms in healthcare and tech over speculative stories. Healthcare and healthtech views Goldman flags healthcare as a prime beneficiary of an innovation‑driven M&A cycle into 2026, with larger, platform‑style deals in AI‑enabled revenue cycle, workflow platforms, advanced diagnostics and clinically validated digital therapeutics. J.P. Morgan’s healthcare technology spotlight expects AI‑enabled healthtech (ambient documentation, analytics, automation) to become the norm, with AI features commanding valuation premia as adoption rises among providers and payors. MedTech and services angles Morgan Stanley explicitly calls out a 2026 “healthcare revival,” overweight the sector, and is bullish on MedTech as post‑pandemic inventory and supply chain issues clear, enabling more normalised growth and renewed capital deployment. Across the banks, structural themes include shift to lower‑acuity and home‑based care, at‑home diagnostics and monitoring, and “plug‑and‑play” hospitals where robotics and devices integrate into modular clinical spaces. AI, capex and digital infrastructure Goldman expects AI capex by hyperscalers and large platforms to exceed 500 billion dollars by 2026, with an expanding universe of beneficiaries beyond core infrastructure into application‑layer and productivity tools, including healthcare IT. J.P. Morgan and Morgan Stanley both emphasise AI moving from experimentation to production, with use cases like imaging, predictive monitoring, scheduling and documentation driving measurable efficiency and clinical impact. Capital markets and M&A setup Goldman’s global M&A outlook and healthcare‑specific synthesis point to higher healthcare deal volumes, more transformative transactions and strategics/PE using M&A to acquire AI and data capabilities rather than build them in‑house. Morgan Stanley highlights a K‑shaped recovery where high‑ROIC, innovation‑rich assets command premiums and MedTech uses divestitures plus focused M&A in cardiovascular, neuro and other high‑growth segments to re‑rate.

Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley and JP Morgan’s combined Healthcare and Technology predictions for 2026

The prevailing mood at the 2026 J.P. Morgan Healthcare Conference is cautious but clearly more constructive, with renewed focus on execution, capital discipline, and selective growth/M&A rather than a broad-based risk‑on rebound.Overall tone For biotech, sentiment is described as cautious yet more positive than 2025, with capital available but highly selective and discipline around valuations and proof points. Across the week, investors are shifting from story-driven narratives to underwriting execution, governance, and credibility, signalling a return to capital discipline rather than momentum chasing. Capital, IPOs and M&A Multiple JPM recaps frame 2026 as a potential comeback year for deal-making, with rebuilding M&A momentum and expectations of more strategic acquisitions and roll‑ups, especially around AI and tech‑enabled services. The new issue window is seen as thin but open for a handful of scaled, profitable or clearly de‑risked issuers, while take‑privates and sponsor‑led deals remain an important release valve. Thematic “mood music” AI has moved from hype to accountability: conversations emphasise real‑world ROI, integration into core infrastructure (R&D, diagnostics, rev cycle, ops) and governance, rather than generic “AI for everything” pitches. Policy, regulation and trust (especially around AI/ML, data, and reimbursement) are being treated as first‑order business variables, not sidebars, adding a sober, compliance‑aware tone to the optimism. Corporate messaging and fundamentals Mega‑ and large‑cap pharma/medtech are striking an upbeat note on medium‑term growth and launch pipelines, stressing “focus on fundamentals” and durable mid‑single‑digit to high‑single‑digit growth targets. Across management teams, there is more emphasis on profitability, unit economics, and operational leverage in digital health and tech‑enabled models, and less appetite for loss‑making growth stories without a credible path to cash generation. How it feels on the ground Commentators describe JPM 2026 as a barometer showing AI and data as mainstream, M&A momentum rebuilding, and investors rewarding proven business models over blue‑sky narratives. A recurring takeaway is that reputation, trust, and transparency around AI and clinical value have become strategic assets, which is tempering exuberance and pushing the tone toward measured, fundamentals‑driven optimism.
